In addition to his involvement in school-related litigation in the state and federal courts, he has experience in labor mediation and arbitration under the auspices of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service (FMCS) and the American Arbitration Association (AAA).  Mr. Compton has negotiated numerous collective bargaining agreements with professional (teachers) and support personnel on behalf of boards of education during his career utilizing a variety of negotiation methods including, but not limited to, traditional, interest-based bargaining, and fact-finding.

Mr. Compton regularly gives speeches and in-service presentations to school district personnel and members of boards of education throughout Ohio.  He also is extensively involved in the daily counseling of school district leaders concerning a myriad of topics ranging from labor/employee issues to student and employee discipline and other areas requiring preventative advice.

Representative Matters
  • Successfully defended a northeast Ohio school district, from administrative proceedings to the U.S. Supreme Court, against a parent's challenge to the scope of special education services provided by the district.  The case set the standard for the provision of "extended school year" services for students with disabilities.
  • Represented a board of education in litigation before the Ohio Supreme Court that established the supremacy of negotiated reduction in force procedures.
  • Since 1979, has successfully negotiated collective bargaining agreements on behalf of school boards with major employee unions including Ohio Education Association, American Federation of Teachers, International Brotherhood of Teamsters, National Conference of Firemen & Oilers, and Ohio Association of Public School Employees
