Ian is a trial and transactional attorney that focuses his practice on businesses and the personal and professional needs of their owners. As an advocate, he has tried cases and has broad experience in business and strategic planning, management-side labor relations, and commercial and trust litigation issues—including defending pension and healthcare plans, executives and governing boards on compensations issues, and collective-bargaining on behalf of municipalities and energy companies. Ian's clients include banks, trusts, medical groups, municipalities, charities, oil and gas producers, institutions of higher education, energy companies, farmers, ranchers, and select entertainers and entrepreneurs.

Prior to joining Roetzel, Ian was an in-house lawyer and senior administrator for an independent law school and has substantial experience with all aspects of law school governance and higher education compliance, including labor and employment disputes, Clery Act reporting, Title IX, and internal investigations. Ian has represented several colleges and universities or their qualified plans in employment matters, collective bargaining, union avoidance, employee benefits planning and disputes, and a university’s sale of an international campus. Ian also has executive compensation experience in higher education and other corporate settings, including trade secret, non-compete, and ERISA litigation or negotiating of 409A and 457 agreements for companies or executives.

Representative Matters

  • Successfully secured a judgment of $1.3 million against an estate sale company for breach of contract and civil theft
  • Successfully defended the largest global brewer against picketing threats and secondary strike activity involving a 30 ft. inflatable rat at Superbowl XL
  • Successfully defended world’s largest retailer against "corporate campaigns" and an employee hunger strike
  • Successfully defended energy pipeline and bulk transport company against strike activity following expiration of collective bargaining agreements
  • Successfully counseled nuclear-energy client regarding withdrawal liability related to multi-employer pension fund across several states
  • Successfully defended automotive and steel manufacturers against allegations of unfair labor practices in several states
  • Successfully defended a multi-state collective action against retailer for alleged overtime violations
  • Helped negotiate a "win-win" sale of business in lieu of a plant shut-down
  • Successfully tried three employee benefit cases on behalf of national employers and executives
