Overview
Mr. Sheriff focuses his practice on advising public school districts, charter schools, and other educational entities on a wide variety of general legal matters including constitutional issues, property disputes, labor and employment disputes, discrimination allegations, special education, student enrollment, residency, transportation, discipline, participation in academic and extracurricular activities, and investigations. He assists school districts in all matters involving litigation at administrative, state, and federal level from inception to resolution including drafting and filing pleadings and motions, appeals, conducting direct and cross-examination of witnesses, and oral arguments.
He has advocated on behalf of school districts in drafting complex settlement agreements, releases, and contracts, and in private negotiations. Mr. Sheriff also has experience drafting operating policies and procedures consistent with statutory and regulatory mandates and proactive approach to managing emerging challenges impacting operations, including compliance with various federal and state statutes, including Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Right-to-Know Law, and the Sunshine Act.

- Successfully defended appeal of case of first impression in federal court and saved school district at least $200,000 in tuition costs and legal expenses
- Participated in special education due process hearings and appeals, as necessary
