In the world of health care, there are three significant federal laws that all health care providers and practices must understand and follow: The Physician Self-Referral Law, which commonly is known as the Stark Law; the Anti-Kickback Statute (AKS); and the False Claims Act (FCA). Often referred to collectively as the “three-headed monster,” these laws form a rubric of health care regulations that, if violated, can result in significant financial and, in some instances, even criminal penalties.
